Akron East High Alumni Association Board Meeting

Minutes – Thursday, May 7, 2026

Attending:  Michelle Anderson, Larry Bond, Marsha Bond, Chuck Hayes, David Hoff,

Sharon Kerechanin, Kenneth Larson, Mike Nickolich, Mike Oliver, Michelle Sibbio, Janet Stanley

Absent:   Rochelle Henderson, Marcia Martz, Paul Mostyn, Don Young

The meeting began at 12:08 p.m.

Secretary’s Report:  M.Oliver, President, asked for comments and acceptance of April minutes

There were no comments and C. Hayes moved and S. Kerechanin seconded to accept the minutes as written and submitted.

Note:  In this month’s meeting, the agenda items were reorganized to ensure Board members who had to leave early would be in attendance for the voting of the Scholarships..

Scholarships:  M. Bond

  • M. Bond discussed the rankings to the awarding of scholarships to  East Senior applicants. 
  • Thank you to M. Oliver,M.Anderson, K.  Larson and M. Nickolich for their scholarship rankings and insights.
  • 17 applications were submitted this year. Each was ranked in multiple criteria and totaled.  All totals were then averaged for each and a final ranking for each applicant.
  • 13 out of 17 applications is one option that we could award  for a total of $31,500 (76%) or the second option was to award 8 out 17 for a total of $22,000. The board discussed both of the above options and voted on which one was  preferred to adopt for the awards.
  • The motion to award 13 out of 17 applicants was voted on and passed.
  • Dr. Hoff thanked the committee for their assistance in reviewing and ranking the applicants. 
  • The scholarships will be presented at The Senior Recognition Ceremony  on Wednesday, May 20th beginning at 8:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend. (NOTE:  The actual Recognition Ceremony was changed to Tuesday, May 19th after our May 7th board meeting.

Hall of Fame:  M. Sibbio

  •  M. Sibbio announced the 2027 Hall of Fame Ceremony will be held on Thursday,

April 22, 2027 at Guy’s Party Center.

  • P. Mostyn has joined the HOF Committee
  • M. Nickolich discussed the subject of possibly having the HOF Ceremony at the school so the students could attend and see the importance of the Hall of Fame and how it contributes to the legacy of East High/CLC
  • M. Sibbio will contact the school administration to see if the school can put the HOF videos on the TVs in the classrooms/library.  M. Bond suggested having HOF or alumni information/ announcements on a weekly loop on the TVs throughout the East/CLC building.
  • A motion was made to have the HOF Committee approach the school administration .  find an avenue to showcase the HOF Ceremony to the student body.  The motion was unanimously passed.
  • K. Larson thanked M. Sibbio for her contribution to the HOF Ceremony. He also expressed thanks for Joe Howard, the photographer, of Carmen Studios for the photographs of the inductees and of the Ceremony,
  • K. Larson discussed the Recap Meeting of the HOF Committee and what changes the committee will be considering for next year’s event..
  • M. Sibbio stated that from the Recap Meeting, the Committee will  begin program profiles earlier and work with the inductees to gather event data following  the November 2026 Committee/Board voting for the 2027 inductees.
  • Selection letters out in November with November  RSVP deadline to ensure the inductees can attend the HOF Ceremony. The letters will have the event date, time, and place in the letter.
  • Follow-up letter to ensure the Committee receives responses prior to December 2026 holidays.
  • M. Sibbio stated the Committee will conduct a pre-meeting with inductees about the award so they know all the expectations of the acceptance of the award.  S. Kerechanin suggested including the format of the Ceremony, such as information needed from the inductees, who is speaking, amount of time for speeches, guests, etc.
  • When inductees are giving their acceptance speeches, perhaps play instrumental music to flag time to finish up speech. D. Hoff suggested having some type of a “traffic light” to alert the inductee of the time left to finish speech.
  • All suggestions will be considered in planning next year’s event.

Treasurer’s Report: L. Bond

  • Business Checking:  Balance: $3,645.80
  • Offsite storage rental:  $124.00
  • Stamps for 60+ mailing invitations – $124.80
  • Business card stock from Avery -$53.21
  • Rubber ink stamp return address to Akron EHS for Alumni – $14.36
  • Credit Card Balance Due – 5/14/26 – $320.63 transfer scheduled
  • All accounts were reconciled successfully
  • Final Report on Reverse Raffle:  Profit of $11,078.80

Communications:  M.Oliver

  • April’s  “Spirit Wins” recognition is Steve Fassnacht, the Music Director at East CLC for the  school  production of “Frozen”.

Reverse Raffle:  S. Kerechanin

  • S. Kerechanin booked the date for the 2027 Reverse Raffle for Thursday, March 4, 2027 at Guys Party Center.

60+ Reunion:  M. Bond/J. Stanley

  • As of May 7, 118 reservations were received with another month yet to go.
  • One highlight will be the acknowledgement of ROTC this year as part of the program.
  • Class of ‘66 is in charge of a brief program for this year’s event.
  • Our next and last planning meeting is Wednesday, May 13th at 1:00 p.m. Goodyear Hts. Library.  Agenda will focus on programs to be printed by APS and assignment of jobs for event setup. As it stands so far, we have the ballroom set up on the day before the event, June 11.
  • There will be an Alumni Board Table as usual.  If you are able to attend, please return the reservation form as soon as possible.  The incoming class for next year (Class of 1967) will have a complementary table of 8 this year for preview of the event.
  • The event is on Thursday, June 11, 2026 at 11:30 a.m. at Guys Party Center.

Membership:  M. Anderson

  • We received one new annual membership this month for a total of $420.00 in new/renewed memberships for the year.

Recruitment:  M.Oliver

  • No new information on recruitment.
  • Other information provided by M. Oliver.
  • He  received a call from Tanya Cash, a relative of Wayman Cash, Class of 1953, a 2016 Hall of Fame inductee, about a billboard on E. Market Street. She was inquiring if there is a way to post a tribute about Wayman Cash.  Akron East Alumni Association is not involved with any postings on the billboard. .  We post information on Facebook and on our website about the Hall of Fame inductees.
  • The May “Spirit Wins” recognition is for Rosemary Fitzpatrick, the IT Instructor at East CLC,  for her and her team‘s contribution and hard work on preparing the videos for the 2026 Hall of Fame Ceremony.
  • M. Oliver had asked M. Sibbio to see if she could obtain the videos of the 2025 Hall of Fame inductees so he could post on Facebook.

Other Business:

  • Discussion of changing meeting dates and time for the board meetings in June, July, August and September due to some board members’ scheduling conflicts.
  • Board Meetings will be held on the following dates as follows: Please note the day, time and location:
  • Wednesday, June 3, 2026 – Noon @ Goodyear Library
  • NO MEETING IN JULY
  • Wednesday, August 5, 2026 – Noon @ Goodyear Library
  • Wednesday, September 2, 2026 – Noon @ Goodyear Library
  • We will discuss in September the dates and location for future meetings for the rest of the year.
  • M. Nickolich announced that he will be moving to Georgia on May 28, 2026 and will no longer be able to attend board meetings. 
  • M. Sibbio distributed the Hall of Fame photographs of the inductees to the 2026 inductees, M. Nickolich and S. Kerechanin.  She will make sure the other inductees receive their photographs from the Ceremony.
  • M. Sibbio discussed the preliminary plans to rework the Hall of Fame pictures in the hallway at East CLC.

Motion was made by L. Bond and seconded by C. Hayes to adjourn the meeting at 1:48 p.m.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, June 3, 2026 at NOON @ Goodyear Library.
