Alumni Board Meeting Minutes For August 2025

Akron East High Alumni Association, Inc.

Minutes: August 7, 2025

Attending:   Michelle Anderson, Larry Bond, Marsha Bond, Chuck Hayes, Sharon Kerechanin, Kenneth Larson, Marcia Martz, Mike Oliver, Michelle Sibbio, Paul Mostyn

Absent:  Rochelle Henderson, David Hoff, Mike Nickolich, Don Young

President:  M. Oliver called the meeting to order at 5:35 pm

Secretary’s Report ( M. Oliver, President, asked for acceptance of July minutes)

  • C. Hayes so moved and M. Martz seconded accepting the July minutes as written.

Treasurer’s Report (L. Bond)

Financial Report:  All PNC accounts reconciled.

  • Checking Account Beginning Balance:  $7,431.31
  • Business Checking Account Balance:  $1,581.87
  • Money Market Beginning Balance: $48,095.04

Major Expenses

  • Scholarships Paid out YTD $21,500
  • Scholarships Paid out that were awarded in Spring 2025 $19,500
  • Scholarships UNCLAIMED in 2025 $20,000

Final Report on 60+:  Net for event was $776.29

Interim Report on HOF:  Net for event was ($402.34)  Outstanding expenses for Supplies &Mailing of Photo costs.

Communications (M. Oliver)

  • M. Oliver reported that announcement of upcoming 8/23 John Stanley Memorial Golf Outing was posted on website and Facebook.
  • M. Oliver tried to contact Mark Price again for East publicity, without success.
  • July Spirit Wins recipients, Larry and Marsha Bond was posted as well as HOF nominations forms for 2026. 
  • M. Oliver will contact East CLC secretary, Christine Morckel to confirm time and meeting site back to the school for September 4th meeting.  He will send board members a reminder email of both the building change and time.
  • L. Bond shared the great response of Victoria Derr’s retirement school sign photo, posted on both our website and Facebook. 

Reverse Raffle (S. Kerechanin)

  • 2026 Reverse Raffle at Guy’s Party Center is booked for Thursday, March 5, 2026.
  • S. Kerechanin talked with alumnus, Deb McCurry of “Sunshine Cupcakes”, who confirmed her commitment for next year’s raffle event.  She has opened a second retail store in Cuyahoga Falls.
  • S. Kerechanin will confirm with Chris Uhl of Guy’s Party Center the agreed upon change in menu for 2026 of “Heavy Hors d’oeuvre Buffet”; Bar option is to remain the same.

Scholarships (M. Bond)

  • To date, 7 out of 16 recipients from May 2025, have claimed their awards.  M. Bond will reach out to Matthew Futch, Project Grad building representative, for any updates on remaining recipients.  As a result, there are greater funds available for renewals.  Currently, there is $20,000 unclaimed still available.
  • M. Bond was recently contacted by a highly regarded previous 2024 recipient at The University of Akron for renewal money consideration.  M. Bond presented to the Board for discussion and approval among members.  M. Oliver made a motion to grant a $2,000 renewal award.  The motion was passed unanimously. 
  • M. Bond shared date of upcoming EHS Faculty Meeting at 8:00 A.M. on Wednesday, August 20th.  The Alumni Association has been asked to share a brief presentation about scholarships and other programs that are supported throughout the school year, as there are many new faculty members.  M. Bond will share the Board’s recent decision at July’s meeting to reduce number of annual scholarships to 8, in favor of increasing support for building wide program needs.  Dr. Noland agreed to submit a list for consideration moving forward.
  • M. Bond requested agreement to provide bottled water/snacks again to faculty from the Alumni Association for their East CLC “Open House” on Tuesday, August 19th, as this is a long day for them.  It involves approximately 130 faculty members.  M. Oliver suggested that we allow $100 for that purpose.  C. Hayes brought forth the motion and all agreed.

60+ Reunion (M. Bond and J. Stanley)

  • Thursday, June 11, 2026 date has been reserved for next year’s 60+ Reunion event at Guy’s Party Center.  The class of 1966 will be the new, honored class.
  • A follow-up meeting to evaluate this year’s event and make suggestions for next year’s reunion was held on Wednesday, July 16 at the Tallmadge Library at 1:00 p.m.  M. Bond recorded feedback shared to keep for consideration at next year’s event. 
  • M. Bond shared highlights of those suggestions that were recorded.  They will be included in initial meeting with Guy’s Party Center as well for planning in 2026.

Hall of Fame (S. Sibbio)

  • For next 2026 induction consideration; L. Bond reported 1 forwarded new application, C. Hayes shared 2 nominations and S. Sibbio reported 1 nomination in addition to 4 carry overs from last year.
  • S. Sibbio reported that photos from 2025 ceremony were received and will be mailed. The HOF committee will purchase picture frame and submit bill for group photo to be mounted at East CLC.
  • Trophy bill will also be submitted to alumni treasury by S. Sibbio from this event.

Membership ( M. Anderson)

  • M. Anderson met with L. Bond to coordinate and update current membership data base.
  • There are 91 names currently in database who are members. 

Recruitment/Akron East Alumni Association Board (Marcia Martz)

  • M. Martz met with J. Stanley and M. Anderson ahead of this meeting to strategize recruitment plans for new Alumni Association Board members.  The end goal is to attain a younger board and goal of where do we perceive us to be in 20 years.
  • M. Anderson provided a summary document to the board of their initial findings.
  • It was decided to post an informative letter on all available sites (our alumni website, Classmates and Facebook social group etc.) for information on joining the Akron East Alumni Association Board. Discussed importance of making presence known monthly on social media.  
  • It was agreed to seek out class officers and reunion leaders from those classes 1977-1990 in which to begin.  Ask when reunions are scheduled and if respective data bases could be used for this purpose.  L. Bond is to send M. Anderson computer program used for 60+ Reunion contacts to help in this.
  • Class years were assigned to present committee members for calling to inform whenever possible.  M. Martz to send “talking points” to use for such calls.  Google and Ohio Voter Registrations were suggested to validate potential contacts.
  • “Business Card” format on joining Alumni Association Board and colorful brochures to have for future events would also be helpful.

John Stanley Memorial Golf Outing (Larry Bond/Ken Larson)

  • L. Bond reported meeting with F. Silvey to increase number of foursomes; also help with sponsors and donations. 
  • L. Bond shared that event begins at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at Mayfair Country Club.  Note:  Helpers for setup should arrive by 6:15 a.m. 
  • L. Bond went over prizes, drawings and gift cards to date; more is needed.
  • L. Bond shared current volunteers for event:  2 men for golf carts/beverages (EHS pennants to be on each for identification); L. Bond and K. Larson to cover registration at tent; S. Kerechanin and M. Anderson to sell 50/50 at tent; C. Hays and M. Bond to sell beverages at tent and inside before program.

Memorabilia Posting to Website (L. Bond/M. Oliver)

  • L. Bond posted the 2003 through 2005 yearbooks to the website.
  • M. Oliver, K. Larson and L. Bond moved all remaining yearbooks out of East’s office to our offsite storage area – a hard job accomplished!  These yearbooks are to be sold for $5 each in the future.

Other Business

  • L. Bond shared the recent passing of George Anger, instrumental in establishing the Marine Corps JROTC at East along with John Maclean.
  • No nominations for August “Spirit Wins” were brought forth.

With no further business, the motion to adjourn was made by M. Anderson and seconded by C. Hayes.  The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 pm.  Next meeting is scheduled for 09/04/2025, 5:30 PM at East CLC Library.
